MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA Type-c) is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) that plays a critical role in modulating cellular energy metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and metabolic homeostasis. Encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA region, MOTS-c represents a novel class of signaling molecules that translocate to the nucleus and regulate gene expression in response to metabolic stress.
